# Gregory-Laflamme instability The **Gregory-Laflamme instability** is an instability for black strings. Parts of the string can become very thin, and the horizon can pinch off in finite time. It demonstrates that naked singularities can form in GR in finite asymptotic time, violating [[0221 Weak cosmic censorship|weak cosmic censorship]] in dimensions higher than four. In the evolution, a self-similar pattern emerges, i.e., the picture looks similar on different scales (like a fractal). ## Related - [[0443 Gubser-Mitra conjecture]] - [[0221 Weak cosmic censorship]] ## Refs - reviews - [[Gregory2011BookChapter]][](https://arxiv.org/pdf/1107.5821.pdf) - original evolution: [[LehnerPretorius2010]][](https://arxiv.org/abs/1006.5960) - recent independent evolution: [[2022#Figueras, Franca, Gu, Andrade]]
